A NEW crimefighting group is in action on Tuesday making homes more secure against burglars.

A Burglary Day of Action is the first event organised by County Durham’s Community Safety Partnership which was set up last week when all seven districts merged to form a unitary authority.

Residents will be offered advice and information as well as security equipment.

Partnership chair Rachael Shimmin said: "Burglary is often an opportunist crime and the public can reduce the chances of becoming a victim by removing the opportunity.

"With almost 50 per cent of burglaries occurring at insecure homes the partnership is using the day to remind everyone to ‘Keep It Safe, Keep It Locked’." In Newton Aycliffe the meeting point will be a town centre shop next to the Post Office where different agencies will hand out leaflets and demonstrate and sell equipment.

In Derwentside PCSOs and a Neighbourhood Watch officer will set up a mobile office at the top of Stanley Front Street from 9.30am to 12noon, moving to Morrison’s car park in Consett from 1 to 3.30pm.

In Durham City the campaign is targeting the student population. A University Liaison officer is visiting campus areas and writing to all undergraduates while thousands of crime prevention leaflets have been sent out to public offices.

Wear Valley street wardens are on hand with crime prevention advice and have stocked up on light timers and door chains for vulnerable properties. Anyone wanting to apply for these should call 01388-765555 Stands will be outside ASDA in Peterlee with leaflets, UV property marking packs, bike passports, fridge magnets, pens, key rings and notepads as well as a supply of door alarms and alerters.

Chester-le-Street’s drop in shop will be open in Front Street for people to pick up leaflets and ask for advice.
