Today's unveiling of the "Angel of the South" reminds me of the time plans for the Angel of the North were revealed in the early nineties.
Under a previous editor who hated public art, The Northern Echo condemned the £1m angel as a scandalous waste of public money. I remember being instructed to write editorial comments decrying the idea.
But how wrong we were. The angel has become one of the most popular landmarks in Britain and it is now hard to think of our region without it.
The "Angel of the South" is a giant white horse, designed by artist Mark Wallinger, which will stand 50 metres high in Kent.
I love horses - I was a particular fan of near-white racehorse Desert Orchid - but I'm struggling to get too excited about this one.
OK, so a prancing white horse is the logo for the county council, but this horse isn't prancing. It's just standing there.
I can't see that our angel has much to worry about.
