A MONK who spent virtually his entire life at Ampleforth Abbey in North Yorkshire has died at the age of 92.
Although born in Wimbledon, Father Benet Perceval went to school in Ampleforth and apart from three years studying in Oxford, remained in the monastic community near Helsmley.
From 1945 up to his death he was secretary of the Ampleforth War Memorial Trust Fund, providing bursaries for students and was manager of the school shop for several years.
He became the first housemaster at St John’s House and for six years was second master at Ampleforth College.
In 1988 Father Benet became prior of the community as well as being on the farm board and farm committee, overseeing work on Ampleforth’s farmland.
Other positions he held included acting senior classics master and assistant guestmaster.
In recognition of his service to the community and the English Benedictine Congregation, he was appointed to the titular dignity of Cathedral Prior of Durham.
