Two men have been banned from selling items in County Durham following reports of residents being disturbed by cold callers in Barnard Castle yesterday.
Officers located the men after several reports of two cold callers going door-to-door trying to sell items from backpacks.
The men said they would leave the area but when they did not, they were further reported to be summonsed to court and given Community Protection Warnings (CPWs) which means they are now banned from selling items or taking orders for goods in the county.
Officers would like to thank the residents who reported the suspicious activity and are encouraging all residents to remain vigilant against cold callers.
Residents can also pick up ‘No Cold Caller’ stickers for free from the Emergency Services Hub.
The stickers can be placed in windows meaning residents will not have to open the door to cold callers and guard against potential scams.
The signs also give readers further advice on the reverse if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation.
PC Robert Booth, of Barnard Castle Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “While many residents reported yesterday’s cold callers were polite, they still caused concern for residents and officers told them to leave the area.
“When that did not happen, they were further given Community Protection Notices and we hope this gives some reassurance to those who felt intimated.

“If you are faced by a doorstep caller, we would urge that you decline their services at the door and do not allow them access to your property.
“Concerned residents should also report incidents to 101.”
Stickers are available to collect from Emergency Services’ Hub front counter between 10am to 3pm on weekdays.
