Aldi has announced plans to open a new store in the North East.

After planning approval was granted by Newcastle City Council, the existing Aldi store on Stamfordham Road, Westerhope, will be relocated to the former Go Outdoors unit on West Denton Retail Park.

The new store will have a sales area of 1,476 square metres, compared to the existing store's 850 square metres, and will also see an improved size of car park from 69 to 111 spaces.

Aldi Westerhope store will remain open until the new store is ready to start trading.

All staff at the Westerhope store will transfer over to the new store, and up to 15 full-time equivalent jobs will be created.

A new pedestrian crossing will be installed on West Denton Way to allow safe pedestrian access to the store.

Aldi has also confirmed that a deal has been agreed with Pure Gym to take their existing unit, creating further employment for 12 to 14 people within the new facility.

Plans for the store will provide an investment of around £5 million into the local economy according to Aldi.

Additional employment opportunities will also be available during the refurbishment of the store and in the supply chain.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: "We're delighted members approved our plans for the relocation of our outdated store.

"We have worked closely with officers and amended our plans in light of comments received from Newcastle City Council to develop a scheme that is fit for purpose.

"We look forward to developing our new store shortly."
