A man in his 20s has tragically died in what was described as a "serious" crash that has prompted the arrest of a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Emergency services were called to the A69 near Throckley, on Thursday evening at around 11.30pm (November 28) following reports of a collision on the westbound route.

A grey Ford Raptor was said to have been travelling west when it came off the road - and led to the death of a passenger in his 20s.

Police have confirmed that a man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A stretch of the road was immediately closed whilst an investigation into the incident begins, and remains closed nearly a day on.

The ambulance service attended the scene and released a statement.

A spokesperson added: "We were called to a road traffic incident at the junction of A69 and Ponteland Road shortly after 23:30 last night (Thursday 28 November).

"We dispatched a specialist paramedic, a duty officer and two double-crewed ambulances."
