Two people have been rushed to hospital following a crash on the A1(M) between Newton Aycliffe and Bradbury. 

The crash happened at about 2,10pm today (Thursday, November 28), which saw motorists stuck in standstill traffic for more than two hours.

Two patients have been taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, where their current condition is unknown. 

An eyewitness stuck in the traffic jam said he had counted four fire engines and four ambulances.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic collision today (28 November) at 14:15 on the A1 near Newton Aycliffe.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one clinical team leader and received support from our colleagues at North East Immediate Care.

"Two patients were taken to University Hospital of North Durham."

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called shortly after 2.10pm today following a multi-vehicle collision on the A1(M) near Newton Aycliffe.

Paramedics and colleagues from the fire service also attended the incident, which happened on the northbound carriageway approaching junction 60.

At least one person is believed to have sustained injuries during the collision, but they are not thought to be serious.

The road has been closed to allow for recovery of the vehicles.
