A north East mental health hospital is set to launch a virtual tour to help ease patients' anxiety before they visit the facility.

Patients and carers visiting Roseberry Park Hospital, in Middlesbrough, will soon have access to a groundbreaking tool designed to reduce anxiety and provide a sense of familiarity before arriving.

A new 360-degree virtual tour of the hospital’s Dalesway Unit is in development, offering a detailed digital walkthrough of key areas like the reception, corridors, and café.

If successful, the initiative could expand to at least ten other TEWV sites within the next year.

“The virtual tour was inspired by feedback from involvement members, who suggested that knowing what a place looks like ahead of time could help ease the fear of the unknown. I’m thrilled to see this idea coming to life.”

Using state-of-the-art cameras, infrared sensors, and AI technology, the project creates a realistic 3D model of the Dalesway Unit.

Patients, carers, and staff will be able to explore the space on their phones, tablets, or computers from the comfort of their own homes.

Simon Adamson, TEWV’s director of estates, facilities, and capital, said: “Navigating unfamiliar environments can heighten stress for anyone, but especially for those already coping with mental health concerns.

"Providing a clear, accessible virtual introduction to our spaces can help alleviate some of that anxiety and create a more welcoming experience.”

The pilot tour for the Dalesway Unit is expected to go live early in the new year and will be accessible through the Trust’s website.

"Future patient appointment letters may also include direct links to the virtual tour, ensuring easy access for all.

Liam Corbally, TEWV’s head of co-creation, shared a personal perspective: “I know what it feels like to be told you need to attend a service when you’re already struggling.

"The idea of walking into the unknown can be a huge barrier. A tool like this, which lets people see and understand where they’re going, can make a world of difference in reducing that initial anxiety.”
