A person has died after being "hit by a train" between Darlington and Newcastle.
Police and paramedics were called to the train line on Monday (November 25) evening to reports of a casualty on the tracks at 6.48pm.
All lines between Darlington and Newcastle were closed, with those travelling warned to expect delays of up to 60 minutes and disruption until the end of the day.
British Transport Police has sadly confirmed that a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.
A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers were called at 6.48pm on 25 November to reports of a casualty on the tracks.
"Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

LNER previously said: "We are sad to report that due to a person being hit by a train between Newcastle and Darlington all lines are blocked. Train services running through these stations may be delayed.
"Ticket acceptance is in place with the following operators: Avanti between London Euston and Edinburgh, Northern between Newcastle and Carlisle, and Transpennine Express on any reasonable route."
