Scaffolding is back up around the new Durham bus station and is expected to remain there for a number of months - only a year after it opened following multiple construction delays.

Durham County Council confirmed that "unforeseen work" is necessary at the city's North Road station. Contractors are expected to begin work on the station early next year.

The bus station opened in January 2024, half a year behind schedule after the pandemic caused delays.

Over summer, road works began outside the bus station, to resurface North Road, remove temporary bus stops, and refurbish footpaths to create a more "welcoming first impression" for visitors to the city.

Susan Robinson, Durham County Council’s head of corporate property and land, told The Northern Echo: “Temporary scaffolding has been erected to allow unforeseen work to be carried out in a safe manner whilst maintaining an operational bus station.

(Image: The Northern Echo) “We have had to close the footpath along the North Road side of the station ahead of this work being carried out but a diversion route is in place and pedestrian access to the facility remains possible from both front and rear entrances.

“We have been working closely with our contractor to agree the work required and are currently anticipating that this will commence early in 2025.

"We will aim to get the work done and the footpath open as soon as possible, and would like to apologise for any disruption and inconvenience caused ahead of completion.”
