The architects of a North East pub tavern say they are "thrilled" to scoop an international design award which recognises some of the most renowned venues across the world.

The Keel Tavern in Sunderland has won the Food In Space international design award in the brewery and pub category, it has been announced.

The 2024 awards have seen venues from across the world including Sydney, Paris, London, Amsterdam and more up for an accolade that includes fast food, bakery and food hall concepts.

Pulp Studios Design House, who were the masterminds behind its creation, have now reacted with glee at not only winning the award - but being the only UK-based venue to take one home.

Gerard McElvenny wrote: "We're thrilled that Pulp Studios Design House have been announced winners of the Food In Space international design award for The Keel Tavern, Sunderland in the Brewery & Pub category.

"Huge thank you to everyone who voted for Keel Tavern and much gratitude to the international judging panel, market leaders in hospitality!

"Special appreciation to Marco Beolchi and Andrea Gallerini of FoodInSpace for noticing us in the first place!

Gerard said: "The brief was to tip its cap to the brewing history of Sunderland - the Vaux Brewery was just across the road from Keel Square.

"The building was a three-storey high concrete box when we started. We wanted to make it feel comfortable - we've created booths and intimate lighting to make people feel like they are in a tavern."
