A Middlesbrough school has been forced to close due to a "serious heating fault".

Outwood Academy Normanby has announced that the school will be closed today (Wednesday, November 20) due to issues with the heating at its Normanby Road site.

It comes amid a winter blast across the UK, with North East residents waking up to icy sub-zero temperatures and frost.

The school said that students will be able to work through Google Classroom, and has apologised for any inconvenience in a post on Facebook.

It is not currently known when the school will reopen.

It comes amid a yellow weather warning across the region, with the Met Office warning that snow and ice could lead to difficult travelling conditions until midday on Wednesday.

This marks the third North East school to close due to heating issues this week, with Tuesday seeing St Annes Church of England Primary School in Bishop Auckland and Greenland Community Primary School in Stanley closed their doors.

Both schools previously said they had no heating and planned to reopen on Wednesday.

Outwood Academy - which looks after children aged 11 to 16 -  first opened in 2019 when Hillsview Academy joined the Outwood Grange family of Schools.

The full statement from the school said: "Due to a serious heating fault, we will be closing school today. Work will be provided through Google Classroom for students. We apologise for any inconvenience."
