Pupils at North Yorkshire primary schools have been gifted hi-vis jackets to help them cross the road safely.

The donation, for the fourth time, has been made by a locally based homebuilder to mark Road Safety Week, which takes place from November 17 to November 23.

Miller Homes, which has developments across the region, gifted the vests to Cambrai Primary School in Catterick and Westgarth Primary School in Marske-by-the-Sea.

The child-size vests will make pupils more visible when walking to and from school and will also be used on off-site visits and trips.

Donna Clark, sales director at Miller Homes Teesside, said: "Road Safety Week, hosted by BRAKE, is a week dedicated to raising awareness of how to stay safe on our roads and reduce the number of incidents which occur.

"With that in mind, we're delighted to support schools in our local communities to help keep children safe as the nights draw in, particularly, and to learn from a young age how to stay safe on our roads."

Road safety tips for children include finding a safe place to cross away from parked cars, using designated crossings wherever possible, avoiding the use of mobile phones, and not having headphones in to be aware of the surroundings.

Children are encouraged to avoid shortcuts down darker streets to save time.

Ms Clark added: "We want the children in our communities to be as safe as possible but understand that walking to school unsupervised is something many do as they get a little older.

"By learning the rules of the road and safe walking practices when they are younger, and the addition of a hi-vis vest, we hope that they will reap the benefits and enjoyment of walking whilst staying safe."

Miller Homes has ten developments across the Teesside region, including Poppy Gardens in Catterick, close to Cambrai Primary School, and Beaconfield Rise in Marske-by-the-Sea, near Westgarth Primary School.
