A further 149 homes could be built next to a major housing scheme in County Durham.
Bellway Homes has submitted plans for the new estate next to the proposed Seaham Garden Village.
The development has permission for up to 1,500 homes, an integrated community health and wellbeing village, commercial and leisure uses, a business innovation hub, a primary school, public open space, community allotments and associated infrastructure.
Plans for hundreds of homes have been approved by Durham County Council since the initial plans were outlined.
Now, housing developer Bellway has applied for a “logical, relatively small scale extension to Seaham Garden Village” that it says will, “support and enhance the sustainability of the current and future planned development surrounding the site.”
A mix of two to five-bedroomed homes are proposed for the new estate, with 22 set to be marketed as ‘affordable’.
A statement from Bellway Homes read: “ The site represents a highly sustainable and logical location for residential development. The site adjoins a strategic allocation which is currently being developed in phases. The proposal provides a modest extension to the garden village and will also contribute to supporting and sustaining the consented services.”
It added that there are no significant constraints identified on the area of land proposed for residential use which would preclude development.
“There are numerous bus links proposed throughout the consented Seaham Garden Village,” the statement said.
“The closest bus stop is located immediately adjacent to the site and can therefore be easily accessed.”
If approved, existing farm buildings currently on the site would be demolished to make way for the new development.
The planning application will be considered by Durham County Council in due course.

Earlier this year it was confirmed 750 affordable homes would be built at Seaham Garden Village in a partnership between Karbon Homes and Esh Construction.
The first homes from Karbon are available in the coming months, for both affordable rent and affordable home ownership options, shared ownership and rent to buy.
Karbon’s 750 homes are being delivered alongside 750 homes for private sale, developed by national housebuilders Taylor Wimpey and Miller Homes.
