Plans to install a passenger help point at Darlington Station have been approved by the council.

The help point, requested by London North Eastern Railway (LNER), is located at Darlington Railway Station on Park Lane and aims to boost accessibility for all passengers, including those with reduced mobility and visual impairments.

Its installation will require careful integration into the Grade II* listed station's infrastructure, ensuring visual coherence by matching conduits and connections to existing structures.

The help point will be wall-mounted on the external wall of the taxi office, using a SIM-operated data connection after approval was given by Darlington Borough Council on Monday.

Power will be routed from the taxi office distribution board, with external components painted to match the building.

The council's evaluation found that the installation will have a "neutral" impact on the station's heritage status.

Any minimal harm identified was deemed to be outweighed by the anticipated public benefits.

The plan complies with Darlington Local Plan policies on heritage conservation and accessibility.

No objections were raised during the consultation and publicity period.

The help point is to be positioned near the taxi drop-off area for maximum visibility and accessibility.

The use of a SIM system for the data connection is designed to avoid invasive cabling, further preserving the station's character.

The decision to grant listed building consent was made on November 18, 2024, with conditions.

Conditions stipulate that work must begin within three years of the decision date and must adhere strictly to approved plans.

The construction process is expected to cause minimal disruption.
