A woman is in hospital after a three-car crash on the A19 early this morning,
It happened on the southbound carriageway shortly before 5am on Tuesday (November 19), between the junctions of the A183 and A690 for Sunderland.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and found one of the drivers had suffered back injuries.
She is currently in hospital receiving treatment for her injuries.
One lane was closed while the cars involved were recovered, sparking delays heading into the rush hour build up.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 5am today (Tuesday), we received a report of a three-vehicle road traffic collision on the A19 southbound, between the junctions for the A183 and the A690, in Sunderland.
“Emergency services attended and the driver of one of the vehicles was found to have sustained injuries to her back.

“She has gone to hospital for treatment of her injuries.
“One lane of the road was closed for a short time to allow for recovery of the vehicles involved.
“The road is now fully re-opened.”
