It’s hard to believe that it’s been 30 years since the release of The Brand New Heavies' seminal album Brother Sister. The release garnered several timeless classics, as well as picking up a multitude of high-profile award nominations.
Fast forward to the present day, and the acid jazz legends are on the road celebrating their musical milestone. The group arrived on Tyneside at the weekend for a sold-out show at The Boiler Shop in Newcastle.
The Brand New Heavies have their roots in the warehouse parties of the 90s, and subsequently, the industrial aesthetic of the historic Boiler Shop proved to be the perfect locale for the occasion. On a Saturday night in Newcastle, the show was always going to be a party.
The fans arrived dressed to impress, just like the headliners. The dance floor was packed as a DJ warmed up the audience with an arsenal of soul and RnB classics during the early stages of the evening.
Brother Sister was the focal point of the show. On this tour, the band are performing the album in full. Just like the album itself, the show opened with Have A Good Time, a sentiment that the audience wholeheartedly embraced.
Lead singer Angela Ricci arrived on stage from the second song of the evening. The vocalist has star presence in spades and captivated the crowd with her glamour and gorgeous voice.
Classics like Dream on Dreamer and Midnight at the Oasis featured very early in the set. Each of which are songs that could have quite easily closed the proceedings, but when performed early in the show further amped up the atmosphere in the room.
And whilst the evening was always going to be a tad nostalgic, the group acknowledged that they have a new album coming out soon. And when asked if the crowd would buy it, the answer was a resounding yes from the North East faithful.
The Brand New Heavies like to spread out and jam, and there were plenty of opportunities in the set for each member of the talented ensemble to get their moment in the spotlight.
The infectious, funky groove of Fake got the crowd moving. The dub/reggae sounds of People Giving Love showcased the wide variety of musical styles encompassed within the group's sound.
Confetti was fired into the audience from canons in front of the stage as the band wrapped up their main set with Day Break. A two-song encore concluded with the unmistakable You Are The Universe.
At the weekend, a live airing of Brother Sister proved to be the perfect soundtrack to a Saturday night on Tyneside. More than 30 years on, The Brand New Heavies are still going strong and showing no signs of slowing down.
