Darlington is set for a very cold day with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for snow and ice for the town.

Temperatures plummeted to -4C overnight and forecasters are predicting it will not get much warmer throughout the day.

There will be sunny spells in the morning before thick cloud cover arrives in the afternoon.

Snow is expected to start falling at 10pm tonight and continue through the night.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "A fine and frosty start will lead into a colder day than of late.

"Plenty of sunshine is expected, although turning hazy later in the afternoon.

"Breezy in coastal districts to emphasise the cold, although wintry showers should remain offshore. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

"A swathe of sleet and snow should sweep southeast overnight, with some heavy snow over the Pennines and south especially. Clearer later, with icy patches and severe frost for many."
