A restaurant in the North East has been commended as one of the UK’s best cheap eats by a top chef, in a long-running food guide published by Sky News – where could it be?

Master Wang's in Newcastle was highlighted by Nick Grieves, chef-owner of Michelin-recommended Ophelia in Gosforth.

The chef said the restaurant has “excellent, authentic and incredibly reasonable Chinese food”.

Commenting on its cheap eat restaurants list around the UK, Sky News said: “Throughout 2024 we're asking Michelin or top chefs to pick their favourite cheap eats - a meal for two for less than £40 - in their part of the UK. We'll add to this list every week...”

What did Michelin chef Nick Grieves say about Master Wang’s?

Nick revealed: “Excellent, authentic and incredibly reasonable Chinese food just down from Haymarket in the centre of town.

“The pork dumplings in hot and sour soup, braised lamb noodles and their pork burger are all incredible and my go-to when ordering.

“I'd definitely recommend just ordering lots and sharing it between you."

On Google reviews, Master Wang's has also been highly praised by customers, receiving a 4.5/5 rating from 128 reviews.

Someone posted: “Master Wang's Noodle Bar in Newcastle is a haven for dumpling and noodle enthusiasts.

“The dumplings are plump parcels of joy, bursting with flavour and perfectly cooked.

“The beef noodle bowls are a hearty delight, with tender slices swimming in a rich and savoury broth.

“Whether you're craving dumplings or noodle bowls, Master Wang's delivers a delicious experience that keeps customers coming back for more.”

Another added: "We came here in the afternoon on a weekday, and the restaurant was packed to the brim with patrons!

“Just look at the menu! Their speciality is indeed the noodles, and it really is delicious!
I ordered the Spicy Beef Shin Noodle. Tender beef chunks with a rich broth, and tangy noodles ( I believe they are hand-made in this restaurant. Correct me if I'm wrong). Spicy, and incredibly rich with Umami.

“For Chinese noodles, here's the spot not to miss in Newcastle!”

Elsewhere across the region, Nick also suggested Barrio Comida in Durham, but sadly the business announced its “sudden permanent closure” on Instagram recently.

Nick shared: “I've been a long-time fan, the food there is incredible and worth the short train journey out of Newcastle.

“It's all class but I'd seriously recommend the birria tacos (with the consommé), camaron tacos and pollo quesadillas.

“Time it right for Taco Tuesday or for Happy Hour and you'll be well fed and watered for an absolute bargain."
