A North East NHS mental health trust has ranked top for doctor training in the region.

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) was rated as the best organisation for training by postgraduate doctors in the General Medical Council (GMC) national training survey.

The survey, which is the largest annual survey of doctors in the UK, allows trainees to share their views on their training and working environments.

The mental health and learning disability trust also climbed up the national rankings to enter the top 10 of all NHS trusts.

The trust's medical education facility supports hundreds of medical students and postgraduate doctors, providing them with a solid foundation in mental health care.

Every year, around 400 doctors rotate through the trust on placement in psychiatry.

Dr Hany El Sayeh, director of medical education at TEWV, said: "The GMC national training survey results put us at the forefront of medical education in the region and once again we are proud of our performance, on both a regional and national level.

"We are now in the top 10 of all NHS trusts in the country – that includes all mental health and acute trusts.

"This is a huge achievement.

"It is so important for us to recruit, develop and retain doctors, in the hope that they will join us on a permanent basis and help us provide the best care to the people in our region."

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, learning disability, and autism care for County Durham, Darlington, Teesside, North Yorkshire, and York.
