People have reacted to a serious crash in Bishop Auckland that has seen one person taken to hospital, with one resident saying: "It’s awful to see something like this".
The crash happened on Newgate Street in the town at around 10.20am on Wednesday (November 13), which saw police, ambulances, the air ambulance and fire engines descend on the area.
Specialist officers from the police force have been investigating the scene, while a bus, believed to have been involved in the incident, was cleared away from the site.
A cordon and closure signs currently remain in place on Newgate Street.
The North East Ambulance Service has confirmed that it sent multiple vehicles to the scene, including an air ambulance.
They confirmed that one person has been taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.
Following the crash, people have been reacting to the news of the serious crash, with people expressing their concerns for those involved.
One woman who works at a nearby shop said: “This has been going on since about 9:30am. They all came here really quickly. The police helicopter has been circling too.
“This area is an accident hotspot. It was just last week there was an accident further up the road.”
Another passerby remarked: “It’s just awful to see something like this.”
Meanwhile, other residents said the whole incident is “shocking” - but accidents around the area are the norm, while some didn't see the crash but saw the aftermath with the police cars and "flashing lights everywhere".
Durham Police has warned drivers and pedestrians about a diversion route.
A spokesperson for Durham Police said: "We are currently dealing with a serious road traffic collision in Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland.
"Colleagues from the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service are also on scene.
"The road is expected to be closed for several hours between Bob Hardisty Drive and Newgate Street.

"Both drivers and pedestrians are asked to find an alternative route."
A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service added: “At 10.22am today (Wednesday), we received a report of a collision on Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland.
“Two crews attended to assist emergency service colleagues and left the scene before 11.30am.”
