Two County Durham men have been arrested after attempting to steal a cash machine from a shop in North Yorkshire.
Officers from North Yorkshire Police received a call just after midnight in the early hours of Saturday (November 9) after a group of men armed with crowbars were seen trying to remove the ATM from the Cooperative store in Richmond.
Members of the public challenged the men, resulting in one man sustaining facial injuries as a result of his actions.
The suspects left the area without the cash machine but left significant damage behind.
Two men in their 40s from the County Durham area have since been arrested in connection with the incident, including one who was arrested by Durham Police when they intercepted his vehicle near Murton.
Both remain on police bail while enquiries continue.
Inspector Mark Gee of Richmond Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “My thanks go to the members of the public who stepped in and challenged the group.
