A church has had a grand reopening after it was 'severely damaged' by a tree 18 months ago.
The reopening of Cowesby Church, near Thirsk, was celebrated with a Harvest Festival Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, October 27, led by the Rev. Dianne Gamble, with the new Bishop of Whitby, the Right Rev. Barry Hill giving the sermon.
The service was well attended and was followed by a shepherd’s pie lunch in the church, provided by villagers.
The north side of the nave and spire roofs, along with the vestry and boiler house were severely damaged by a collapsing oak tree in July 2023, resulting in the church’s temporary closure.
After five months of construction, the outside of the church has been restored, damaged plaster has been repaired, and the interior repainted throughout, which has transformed its appearance.
The work has been funded largely by Ecclesiastical Insurance Group, supported by various grants, along with local parishioners.
Future planned work includes rewiring the church with new LED lighting, and restoration of the Royal Coat of Arms board which will be returned to its original position above the arch under the tower.
