A North East celebrity and X Factor winner brought a touch of festive excitement to the launch of a popular Christmas ice rink.

Joe McElderry opened the Life Science Centre's outdoor ice rink in Times Square, Newcastle, yesterday (Friday, November 8).

The South Shields-born singer and performer, is set to appear in Newcastle's Theatre Royal production of The Little Mermaid later this season.

He was joined by Newcastle University Skating Society members, who performed a festive routine to "Run Rudolph Run".

The evening also featured music from Backworth Colliery Band and appearances by competition winners, marking the start of the city's holiday celebrations.

Joe said: "It’s great to be back at Life. I used to come here as a kid and spent many weekends with my dad here, so it’s lovely to be asked to open the ice rink and to get everybody in the festive spirit.

"Ice skating during the festive season is a lovely tradition and there’s no better place to do it than here."
