The police are investigating an assault in Chester-le-Street where two men attacked another man and reportedly threw a fire extinguisher at him.
The incident happened at 9.30pm on October 15 on Front Street.
The two attackers left their victim with serious head injuries.
Officers are appealing to anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward.
A Chester-le-Street Police spokesperson said: "The incident involved two men who have allegedly assaulted another man, leaving him with serious head injuries.

"It is believed one of the suspects may have also thrown a fire extinguisher at the victim.
"A number of lines of enquiry are ongoing but officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward."
