Three people who left their victim paralysed from the neck down when he jumped out of an upstairs window to escape the armed gang listened to how his life has been left ruined.

Samantha Nunn, her boyfriend Kallum Shilham, and Andrew Hobson were caught on Ring doorbell footage using weapons to smash their way into a house intent on violence.

Their 20-year-old victim was left requiring round-the-clock care after he suffered serious head injuries and a broken neck while trying to flee the armed gang.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the three defendants, and another unidentified person, descended on a house in Thornaby armed with knives and a pool cue with the intention of ‘taxing’ an alleged drug dealer.

Speaking from a hospital bed, the victim told his attackers how he has been left needing round-the-clock care as a result of his catastrophic injuries.

He said: “I have to have carers for the rest of my life. I feel down. I have carers that come in and out of the house. They have to do everything.

“I’m disappointed really. I’m still in shock.”

All three defendants appeared separately as their defence counsel made representations on their behalf as a sentencing hearing got underway.

First to appear was 45-year-old Hobson, who held his head in his hands while the victim impact statement was played in court.

Andrew Turton, representing Hobson, said: “He was a chance visitor to Nunn’s house that night - he said he was unable to repay a debt, and an idea as to how he could repay it was suggested to him.

“He is extremely remorseful and distressed by his participation in this horrific event.”

Next in the dock was Nunn, who was described as the ring leader of the armed attack and was heard shouting encouragement and swearing at the victim.

Robert Mochrie, representing the 33-year-old, said “As horrific an injury as this is, she maintains that a fractured neck - leading to quadriplegia - was not something that she had considered occurring.”

Shilahm’s barrister Erin Kitson-Parker said: “He accepted that they were all equally to blame. Nunn was swearing, using foul language and encouraging them.

“Mr Shilham said nothing. But to his credit, he accepts equal blame. It’s tragic for the victim, who fell from above the window.”

Outlining the case, Paul Rooney, prosecuting, said the victim suffered life-changing injuries when he fell from the window hitting the ground head-first.

He said: “Part of his body made contact with a wheelie bin; the impact with the ground caused immediate catastrophic injuries.

“He can be heard saying ‘help me’ before losing consciousness.”

He said Hobson was caught on camera rifling through the victim’s pockets as he was laid seriously injured on the ground outside the house on Parkfield Way, Stockton, on April 7 this year.

Nunn, of Sandringham Road, Thornaby, was convicted of aggravated burglary and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Her boyfriend, 24-year-old Shilham, of Harrowgate Lane, Stockton, had denied the same charges but was convicted. He had pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article.

The third defendant, Hobson, of Sun Gardens, Thornaby, had denied both charges and also denied the possession of an offensive weapon - a pool cue, but was convicted of all charges.

Judge Timothy Stead remanded them all in custody and they will appear next Wednesday (November 13) to be sentenced.
