A host of Remembrance events will be held across the region this weekend.

Silence will fall across our towns and villages at 11am on Sunday (November 10) marking 106 years since the end of the First World War.

Services will see crowds of civilian and ex-service personnel gather and lay wreaths at memorials to fallen soldiers across the region.

Remembrance Sunday takes place on the second Sunday of November each year to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War.

Local monuments will be lit up in Remembrance across the weekend.

In Durham a festival of Remembrance at the Cathedral will take place across the weekend ahead of Armistice Day on Monday, November 11.

The ticketed event with military music, 1940s songs, and spoken word poetry on Saturday will also mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and thousands of poppies will fall from the central tower of the cathedral as a silence is held.

Marches, services and wreath-laying will take place at countless cenotaphs and churches across the region.

The nation will again fall silent at 11 am on Monday, 106 years to the moment since a peace deal sealed the end of the First World War.

The first two-minute silence in the UK was observed a year later on November 11, 1919.

"The events around Remembrance Sunday are a very important part of our life as Durham Cathedral,” Dean of Durham, The Very Reverend Dr Philip Plyming, said.

"They give us the chance to honour those who have died in the service of their country and also pray for those who serve today and who work for peace in our troubled world."

Traditionally poppies are worn as a symbol of remembrance and as a sign of respect and wreaths of poppies are laid on war memorials. The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal was launched two years after the first silence, in 1921. It hopes to raise awareness about the mental scars veterans live with following their experience in military service.

Tony Routledge, 62, from Catterick, was a Royal Signals Bombardier but was injured in Iraq and suffered depression. Speaking at the launch of the Poppy Appeal last month he said he threw his medals in a river during a mental health crisis, but said the Royal British Legion saved his life.

“I felt the country didn’t care about my service, I couldn’t feel proud about being a soldier anymore and had effectively wasted my life,” he said.
