A man who suffered a stab wound to the chest after kicking someone out of his house told police blood was spurting everywhere from the wound.

Karl Glease had spent the summer day drinking with friends before one man punched his partner in the face and he asked him to leave his County Durham home.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the man returned a short while later and a confrontation took place outside which resulted in Kenneth Walton allegedly trying to murder Mr Glease on Saturday, June 22 this year.

During a video recorded police interview, Mr Glease said he thought he had been punched to the chest until he saw his own blood spurting into the air.

“I grabbed a golf club from behind the door, which was there as I have had my windows put out a number of times, then he has punched me on the chest,” he said.

“The blood was just p****** out of my chest and said - ‘the b****** has just stabbed me’. I said to his girlfriend – ‘you need to call an ambulance’ as the blood was pouring out of me chest.

“That’s about all I can remember. It will stay will stick in my mind as long as I live.”

The court heard how Mr Glease and the 30-year-old had met on the bus from Durham a few weeks early and shared a couple of bottles of beer with him.

Mr Glease said the trouble flared after Walton punched his girlfriend, Diane Glister, in the face when they were arguing in his home on Ely Terrace, Stanley just after 10.20pm.

He said he had been enjoying the sun while having a few drinks and listening to some tunes before the occasion descended into violence.

He added: “He punched his girl in the face, I said – ‘you can get out, I’m not having that in my house’.

"She was still sitting on the sofa so I gave her a cuddle and was talking to her and said – ‘what are you doing with a nutcase like that?’.

“That’s when I heard a bang on the window and went out to see what was going on. I was just giving it a bit of bravado, I thought there might be a bit of fisticuffs but then bang – he hit me in the chest and then there was blood spurting everywhere.”

Mr Glease told the court that he knew Miss Glister through her parents and were friendly but there had never been anything sexual between them.

Walton, of Windsor Street, Trimdon Station, County Durham, denies attempted murder, wounding with intent, grievous bodily harm, possession of a bladed article and assault by beating.

He accepts that the injury caused to Mr Glease happened during the altercation on that night but maintains that he acted in self-defence after being attacked by the complainant and was not responsible for deliberately stabbing him.

During cross-examination by defence counsel Tony Davis, Mr Glease denied hitting Walton with a golf club at the start of the altercation.

When asked why he had swung the golf club at Walton, he replied: “He had stabbed me in the chest then I swung it. It did it because blood was p****** out of my chest.”

The trial continues.
