Durham has been named one of the most expensive cities in the country for a pint according to new research.

A study by UK Debt Expert found Durham is the ninth most expensive UK university city for a pint of lager.

With the first term of the 2024/25 academic year beginning, students at Durham University are expected to pay an average of £4.88 for a pint of lager, with the North East city ranking in the top 10 of most expensive places to buy a pint.

London topped the list as the most expensive city, with an average price of £5.88 for a pint.

This is 123 per cent more than Bangor, where the cheapest pint costs just £2.63.

The rest of the top ten most expensive cities for a pint are Edinburgh (£5.84), Buckingham (£5.45), St. Andrews (£5.30), Twickenham (£5.09), Bath (£4.97), Bristol (£4.92), Salford (£4.90), and Brighton (£4.87).

The cheapest cities for a pint after Bangor are Wrexham (£3.04), Preston (£3.16), Carlisle (£3.26), Swansea (£3.31), Chelmsford (£3.47), Sunderland (£3.51), Aberystwyth (£3.53), Lancaster (£3.54), and Newport (£3.54).

Maxine McCreadie, a personal finance expert at UK Debt Expert, said: "It’s easy for university freshers and events often centred around drinking alcohol to end up costing a lot more than anticipated, especially with the cost of living crisis.

"It can be easy to dip into your student loan or overdraft to fund an extra round, but it’s important to budget these limited funds properly for social activities, being mindful that they will need to last the whole term.

"Student or not, many are feeling a pinch on their finances with the cost of living, in the wake of summer activities, and in anticipation for Christmas festivities."
