A Mexican restaurant tipped in the Good Food Guide has closed suddenly after almost five years.
Barrio Comida has been serving up Mexican street food from its site in Durham since early 2020, receiving high praise from food critics.
Our reviewer said the venue had a “warm and inviting” vibe which transports you to Mexico City but gives stunning views over the river and Cathedral during a visit last July.
In a statement on Facebook owners Shaun Hurrell and Victoria Soulsby said: “It is with a heavy heart that we are to announce the sudden permanent closure of Barrio Comida.
“We want to thank all our guests and staff past and present for all the support you’ve shown us through the years, it’s been an honour to serve you all.”
Barrio Comida first opened on Newcastle’s Quayside in December 2016 and became a staple of the food scene with its Mexican menu, informal atmosphere and cheap prices.
Chef and owner Shaun Hurrell – who worked for Michelin-starred chefs Marcus Wareing and Fergus Henderson in London – announced plans to open the Church Street venue in Durham in late 2019, and it served its first diners in February 2020.
Having survived the Covid pandemic, in 2023 it was named Best Mexican Establishment in the North by the Food Awards England.
“Facing Durham University's student union building and the river, with glimpses of the cathedral through full-length windows, Shaun Hurrell's likeable venue takes its inspiration from Mexican street food, appealing in these environs to both student groups and their professors,” The Good Food Guide said.
Last year Shaun launched La Mesa, an exclusive Mexican venue downstairs from Barrio Comida, but it closed a short time later.

Disappointed regulars expressed their sadness at the news online.
One said: “Without question the best Mexican food the UK has seen. Me and friends had the best time sitting on the tables outside eating tacos, drinking tequilas and Micheladas. So sad I won’t be able to visit again.”
Another wrote: “Such sad news. Shaun is an outstanding chef and Victoria the perfect hostess. Thank you for many wonderful family occasions and anniversaries. It has been our pleasure to attend.”
