A man has been treated for suspected hypothermia following a police chase through Darlington.
Officers spotted a suspected stolen motorcycle and when the rider failed to stop they gave chase.
The pursuit saw the rider travel on and off-road to try to evade police.
A stinger was used successfully to deflate both tyres but despite this the rider continued to drive dangerously and tried to lose them in a nature reserve.
He went to ground in woodland near a river. A short time later officers detained the rider who emerged from the river soaking wet and freezing cold.
The bike was found submerged in the river and it has been recovered.
After receiving treatment for suspected hypothermia, the rider was arrested for numerous offences including theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to stop.
A Durham Roads and Armed Policing spokesperson said: "Motorcycle Section were working with Darlington NPT yesterday, when officers sighted a suspected stolen motorcycle.
"The rider failed to stop and was pursued across Darlington, both on and off-road. Stinger was successfully deployed on the motorcycle which deflated both tyres.
"Despite this, the rider continued to drive dangerously and eventually went off-road into a nature reserve, where he went to ground in woodland beside a river.
