A suspected drink driver has been arrested after a car ploughed into a County Durham shop - leaving two people in hospital. 

Police and paramedics were called to North Road East, in Wingate, on Friday (November 1) after a car ploughed into the front of the Wingate Mini Market - Go Local Extra.

An image from the scene showed how a car had been left on its side in the middle of the street, which was being blocked off by two police cars.

The front of the store was also left visibly damaged. 

Durham Constabulary has now confirmed that a woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol after failing a roadside breath test.

Meanwhile, two passengers who were in the car were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham by the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) for treatment, with their injuries unknown. 

A full statement from the force said: "We were called shortly after 9.10am today to an incident in which a car had collided with a shop in North Road, Wingate.

"A woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol after failing a roadside breath test.

"Paramedics also attended and took two passengers who were in the car to hospital for treatment.

A NEAS spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic collision today (1 November) on Westgate Road West in Wingate shortly after 9am.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew and one duty officer. Two patients were taken to University Hospital of North Durham."
