A pub in County Durham has been named one of Britain’s best to visit for autumn, according to travel experts – is it your local?
The Rose & Crown in Barnard Castle was included in the ‘40 of Britain’s best pub lunches for autumn’ list by Sawday’s, as published on inews.
The popular North East venue was praised for being the ideal place to enjoy local food, ale and a “wonderfully old-school bar” this cosy season, all while getting toasty in front of a fire.
Introducing the pub guide, inews said: “The season of hearty comfort food is upon us and where better to tuck in than a cosy country pub? The experts at Sawday’s have selected 40 venues to tempt your taste buds.”

Why is The Rose & Crown among Britain’s best cosy pubs?
Sawday’s, which specialises in bookings for self-catering places, hotels, B&Bs and inns around Britain wrote: “The building dates to 1733 and stands on the village green next to a Saxon church.
“Roses ramble across stone walls at the front, so grab a pint of local ale, then sit in the sun and watch life pass by. Inside, you can roast away in front of a fire in the wonderfully old-school bar while reading the Teesdale Mercury.”
It added: “There’s a peaceful sitting room for afternoon tea, then an oak-panelled restaurant for excellent food produced by head chef Dave Hunter, using produce from the inn’s kitchen yard and just about everything else from local suppliers.
“The well-put-together menu includes fish from Hartlepool quay, trout and game from local estates.”
When it comes to accommodation, The Rose & Crown is said to have “stylish rooms.”
Sawday’s continued: “Some in the main house, others out back, a couple in a cottage next door – have warm colours, comfy beds, Bose sound systems and super bathrooms.
“You’re near to fabulous Barnard Castle for browsing the antique shops or the moors for cobweb-blowing hikes.”
Lunch is available from £10, a three-course dinner from £33 and a delicious Sunday lunch from £36.
On Tripadvisor, The Rose & Crown has a rating of 4/5 from 322 reviews.
