Temporary traffic lights are set to be installed at an exit off the A1(M) in County Durham this week following a crash at the junction earlier this month.

Drivers exiting the A1(M) from Junction 62 at Carrville will be met with temporary traffic lights starting this week after the original lights were damaged in a crash on October 21.

Traffic was backed up for miles heading northbound at the junction during rush hour in the days following as motorists faced delays of up to half an hour after the crash as the lights were not turned back on.

National Highways has now confirmed that temporary traffic lights will be deployed at some point this week - but a completion date for repairs has not been confirmed.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The traffic lights in question were damaged during a collision on Monday 21 October.

“Due to the damage to the traffic light columns on one of the slip roads, the remainder of the lights could not be turned back on as it would have been unsafe to do so.

“Temporary traffic lights have been arranged and should be deployed this week along with necessary hard signage.

“Plans are underway to find a permanent fix, but there is no timescale for this to be completed.”

The Northern Echo heard from multiple drivers on October 23 who said the lights not working caused "huge delays" as queues stretched as far back as Bowburn.
