Police are looking for the driver of a Mercedes who failed to stop at the scene of a crash which left a taxi driver trapped in his vehicle this morning.

Emergency services were alerted to the collision involving the Mercedes and taxi on Yarm Road (A135), Eaglescliffe, shortly after 1am on Sunday morning. 

The driver of the taxi was trapped and had to be cut out of his vehicle by firefighters. Paramedics treated the driver at the scene before taking the patient to hospital for further treatment. 

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "At around 1.10am on Sunday 27 October police received calls of a collision on Yarm Road, in Eaglescliffe.

"The collision involved two vehicles – a Mercedes and a taxi.

"The driver of the taxi was trapped and had to be extracted by firefighters before receiving treatment from paramedics.

"Enquiries are ongoing to locate the driver of the Mercedes who failed to stop at the scene."

The road was closed for a period of time while the vehicles were removed and police carried out investigations

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a three-vehicle road traffic collision on Yarm Road, Eaglescliffe just after 1:10 this morning.

"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance, a clinical team leader and a specialist paramedic.

"One patient was treated and discharged at the scene and a second was taken to North Tees Hospital."
