Looking for pubs or restaurants that serve the biggest portions of a Sunday roast in County Durham?

Where to go for a Sunday roast in County Durham?

The Farmers Arms

Location: South Side, Shadforth, Durham, DH6 1LL

One person sharing their favourite place for a Sunday lunch said The Farmers Arms has “beautiful food n great staff”.

Someone also wrote on Tripadvisor: “We visited this lovely little pub for Sunday lunch, the staff are very friendly and accommodating. The Sunday lunch was very tasty and got the thumbs up from the kids as well, would definitely recommend it.”

On its Facebook page, The Farmers Arms describes itself as a “traditional country pub with quirky décor”.

The Copper Mine

Location: 26 Job's Hill Bank, Crook, DL15 0UL

Many readers suggested The Copper Mine as the best place to go for a roast in the area.

Additionally, on Google Reviews, a recent customer commented: “Just had Sunday Lunch at the Copper Mine. Service was excellent, food was superb and very good value for money. Our dog was treated as good as we were and had his own bowl of beef and a bowl of water on the house… Very friendly, lovely food, Great surroundings!!! We’ll definitely come back.”

Its Facebook page says: “The Copper Mine is a pub which has a quirky interior and aims to offer food from simple dishes to dishes which any restaurant would be proud to offer!”

At The Copper Mine, the roast meat of the day is served with “fresh seasonal vegetables, creamy mashed potato, a rich gravy and a Yorkshire pudding.”


A small plate costs £8.95 and a regular is priced at £10.95, according to the venue’s website.

The Pub and Kitchen

Location: Front Street North, Cassop, Durham, DH6 4RJ

At Cassop, The Pub and Kitchen are said to have “brilliant service” and “never one miserable waiter,” according to a local who has named it their favourite place for a roast dinner.

A review on Google also reads: “Had lunch today staff very welcoming and polite. great idea no starters on the Sunday lunch menu you enjoy the mains better and room for a very nice selection of desserts. well worth the money and the travel from the Consett area .”

On its website, the village pub reveals it offers a “contemporary twist” and is ideal for “lovers of great country food & drink.”

It adds: “Muddy boots and paws welcome too!”

Fox & Hounds

Location: 24 Teesway, Neasham, Darlington, DL2 1QP

“Fox and hounds Neasham DL2 Outstanding carvery,” wrote one reader under the Northern Echo’s Facebook post.

The Fox & Hounds’ website explains it’s a “traditional dog-friendly pub offering a wide variety of drinks and exciting offers”.

“Relax with a refreshing pint of your favourite larger in hand and a great atmosphere.”

This person who visited recently posted on Tripadvisor: “Popped in today for Sunday lunch having heard nothing but good things and by god it did not disappoint would definitely recommend."

Bishops Lodge

Location: Addison Road, Toronto, Bishop Auckland, DL14 7RJ

Someone who claims Bishops Lodge offers the best Sunday roasts commented: “I was at Toronto lodge [Bishops Lodge] a couple of weeks ago and it was spot on.”

The gastro pub serves “delicious food with a wide selection of wines, spirits and draught,” according to its Facebook page.

For a “traditional” Sunday dinner, you can choose from silverside of beef, chicken supreme, pork belly, “guest roast of the week” and vegetable nut roast.

A small plate costs £11.95 and a large is priced at £13.95, as stated on the Bishops Lodge website.
