The founder of the restaurant chain Babul's, which has locations in Barnard Castle and Darlington has been named as a "curry legend" at an awards ceremony in London.

Rafique Uddin Babul, who began the chain Babul's in 1995, was named a "Special British Curry Legend" by Curry Life Magazine at their awards at the London Marriott, Grosvenor Square, on October 13.

The ‘British Curry Legend’ award each year celebrates individuals and families who have made a lasting impact on the UK’s curry industry.

Sadly, Rafique passed away in 2023 before the chain's Darlington restaurant opened - yet after nearly two years the team have scooped up a set of awards in his name.

One of the many awards includes the North East Bangladeshi Awards (NEBA) on October 7 at The FED in Dunston, Gateshead.

Following the Curry Life honour to their dad, the team wrote on social media: "Our Restaurant in Barnard Castle was recognised for its ability to change, adapt and innovate for the last 29 years, it was described as an institution.

"This award is especially meaningful as it honours the culinary legacy of our beloved father, whose passion and dedication to perfecting his craft laid the foundation for so many chefs and businesses, it also allowed us to do everything we do.

"Thank you to our incredible teams and loyal customers for being part of this journey. Here’s to many more legendary dishes, inspired by the man who started it all."

In the emotional video following the award, his son Zak Ahmed says: "Honestly, it is hugely important. He taught us how to run a business, how to treat your customers and how to do things right.

"Dad gave us exactly what we needed, he taught us the right lessons in life and we are where we are because of the guidance of him."

This is just the latest in a string of awards won by the team this year with the final being The Asian Curry Awards on November 17.

After the nominations were revealed earlier this year, Zak Ahmed told The Northern Echo: "The first year we opened in Darlington we did have teething problems but this year was all about refining our brand and getting things to how it should be.

"We've been able to take a step back and work on the business rather than in the business. But, to be nominated for these awards shows we are doing the right things.

"Difficult decisions and hard work have paid off."
