One person has been taken to hospital after a crash in Bishop Auckland. 

Police and paramedics were called to the A688 on Sunday (October 20) after reports of a crash involving a car and a pedestrian at around 3.30pm. 

The road was closed by police from the Aldi supermarket to the Brewers Fayre roundabout, with an air ambulance landing at the scene. 

While the driver was uninjured, the pedestrian was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, for treatment. Their current condition is not known.

The busy route was closed for several hours while investigations were carried out - with Durham Constabulary now asking anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch. 

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 3.35pm yesterday (Sunday 20 October) to reports of a road traffic incident on Watling Road in Bishop Auckland.

"We dispatched an ambulance crew, a specialist paramedic, a rapid response paramedic, and a clinical team leader to the scene, and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended by air.

"One patient was taken to the James Cook University Hospital by road for further treatment.”

A Great North Air Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "On Sunday our critical care team was activated at 3.45pm to reports of a road traffic collision in Bishop Auckland.

"We had a paramedic and doctor on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 3.53pm. Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to assess and treat a patient.

"The patient was taken to hospital by a NEAS road crew, accompanied by our team."

A force spokesperson said: "Police were called to reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the A688 at Bishop Auckland, at around 3.30pm yesterday (Sunday, October 20)
