The A19 has been closed both ways after a crash between the junctions with the Little Thorpe exit and the A181 Castle Eden.
Police and ambulances are in attendance at the scene just past the Old Shotton turn off.

A National Highways spokesperson said: The A19 is closed both ways between A181 Wingate and Castle Eden & B1320 Peterlee following a serious collision.
"Durham Police are at scene with our traffic officers en route."
