The death of a woman in a flat fire has been confirmed as not suspicious, police have said.

A woman has died after being rescued by firefighters from an "unexplained" blaze at a flat on Carlisle Walk, Stockton, on Monday (October 14).

A cordon was erected across the road as firefighters tackled the fire, with pictures showing the large-scale emergency response at the scene.

White-suited investigators were then spotted probing the first-floor flat into the early hours, carrying out evidence bags from the scene and using torches to examine an area covered by a green sheet, just outside the front door.

Initially, an investigation was launched by Cleveland Police and the fire service into the cause of the incident, which is currently being treated as "unexplained".

But after making enquiries, Cleveland Police have today confirmed that her death is not thought to be suspicious.

No other people were rescued from the property - however, a firefighter suffered a burn to the back of their neck and received treatment on the scene.
