Three adults and a child have been hospitalised following an "explosion" in Violet Close, Newcastle, in the early hours of the morning.

Emergency services first received reports of a fire just before 12:45am this morning.

Multiple fire engines have been in attendance and continue to work at the scene this morning.

Road closures are in place around the surrounding area and Northumbria Police have warned people to keep their doors and windows shut.

(Image: NNP) A spokesperson said: "Shortly before 12.45am today (Wednesday), police were contacted by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, who are dealing with a fire at an address in the Violet Close area of Newcastle.

"Emergency services remain in attendance at the scene.

"Road closures are in place on Buddle Road and the surrounding area, and motorists and residents are advised to avoid the area and to keep doors and windows closed if they see and smell smoke."

(Image: NNP) The North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to an incident in the Elswick area of Newcastle at 00.45h today (16 Oct).

“We dispatched four paramedic crews, four crews from our hazardous area response team (HART), a doctor, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader, a duty officer and a tactical advisor to the scene. 

"We treated and conveyed four patients - three adults and one child - to hospital for further treatment."

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have been battling the fire through the night.

"Please avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed until further notice. Thank you."

A Northern Gas Networks spokesperson said: "Northern Gas Networks (NGN) engineers are this morning (October 16) responding to an incident in the area of Violet Close, Newcastle, Tyne and Wear.

"Our teams are supporting the emergency services during this ongoing incident.

"Anyone that smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24-hours a day, seven days a week."

Newcastle City Council put out a statement in the night alerting people to the ongoing incident.

It said: "Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is currently responding to an incident in Violet Close, Benwell.

"Please avoid the area if you can, and for those nearby please stay indoors and keep windows closed until further notice. Thank you."
