A woman has died after being rescued by firefighters from an "unexplained" blaze at a Stockton flat.
Police, fire, and ambulance crews were called to Carlile Walk, off Talbot Street, on Monday, October, 14, after reports of a fire at around 9.15pm.
A cordon was erected across the road as firefighters tackled the fire, with pictures showing the large-scale emergency response at the scene.
White-suited investigators were then spotted probing the first-floor flat into the early hours, carrying out evidence bags from the scene and using torches to examine an area covered by a green sheet, just outside the front door.
Cleveland Fire Brigade has now confirmed that a woman was rescued from the building but tragically, despite the best efforts of emergency services, has since died.
An investigation has been launched by Cleveland Police and the fire service into the cause of the incident, which is currently being treated as "unexplained".
No other people were rescued from the property - however, a firefighter suffered a burn to the back of their neck and received treatment on the scene.
Police remained at the scene on Tuesday morning.
The force said: "Police attended a report of a fire at a property on Carlile Walk in Stockton around 9:15pm on Monday 14th October.
"Sadly, the body of a woman was found in the property. Officers have informed the woman’s family and our thoughts remain with them at this extremely difficult time.
"Enquiries are continuing along with Cleveland Fire Brigade to establish the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as unexplained."
A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson added: "A woman has sadly died after being rescued from a flat fire in Stockton.
"On Monday, October 14, at 9.07pm, our Fire Control received a 999 call reporting a fire on the first floor of a flat on Carlile Walk in Stockton.
"Three fire engines from Stockton and Thornaby were dispatched to the scene, with the first arriving in five minutes.
"Our firefighters immediately entered the property using breathing apparatus equipment and rescued the resident from the fire.

"Tragically despite our crews’ best efforts, the woman sadly passed away.
"We can confirm no one else was rescued from the property, however, a firefighter suffered a burn to the back of their neck and received treatment on scene. The cause of the incident is currently being investigated."
