Former ravers are among the new residents of a new affordable housing development on the site of a former North East nightspot.

Two women who once frequented the Tall Trees Hotel and nightclub in Yarm, one of Teesside’s landmark nightclubs, are now among the residents living on the redeveloped site.

Lyndsey Allen and Angela McGlade, both former regulars at the club during its heyday, now call the new housing development home.

Now, the site has been repurposed into a residential area that retains some nostalgic appeal for residents like Lynsey and Angela, who have fond memories of the venue’s past.

Lyndsey Allen, 45, who used to visit the nightclub in the 1990s, has moved into one of the two-bedroom rented properties with her five-year-old daughter, Millie.

She said: “I am from Middlesbrough originally and used to go to Tall Trees in the 90s, so when I heard about the homes I applied and was so happy when I discovered I had been allocated one.

“It’s a lovely home and the perfect size for myself and Millie, plus it’s very affordable, so we couldn’t be happier.”

Similarly, Angela McGlade, who has purchased a 25 per cent share of a three-bedroom property, reflected on her personal circumstances.

She said: “I couldn’t afford to buy a home outright, so I looked at these and even when you add up what I pay for rent and mortgage, it’s still a lot less than if rented privately.”

She continued: “I also have the opportunity to increase the percentage I own in this property and my aim is to buy it outright so it couldn’t have worked out any better for me.”

The Tall Trees development, led by Broadacres Housing Association in partnership with Esh Construction, involved transforming the former hotel and nightclub site into a £13 million housing project.

Broadacres’ Director of Development and Investment, Helen Fielding, said the project offers high-quality homes for a wide range of people, adding, “It’s lovely to hear of people like Lyndsey who have been able to make their home at a location which holds such happy memories.”

Tom Hawley, Head of Affordable Housing Growth at Homes England, praised the development, he said: “This scheme shows how effective the Affordable Homes Programme can be to invest in ambitious housing association partners like Broadacres to help them create new homes on brownfield sites in communities like Yarm that have high need for new homes like these.”

A handful of homes are still available for outright sale through Broadacres’s private development arm, Mulberry Homes Yorkshire.
