A well-known and historic castle hotel near Darlington has finally been sold.

Walworth Castle Hotel, a stunning medieval fortress with a rich history and royal connections, has been on the market for nearly a year.

The hotel near Heighington, located between Burtree Gate and Summerhouse, is set in 12 acres of picturesque grounds and has been a popular destination for weddings and special events over the years.

It famously hosted King James VI of Scotland on his journey to become King James I of England, with the room he stayed in now serving as the Bridal Suite.

Over the centuries, the castle has had several roles-from a family residence to a Second World War base for the Durham Light Infantry, and later a girl’s school - before being transformed into a hotel.

The hotel, boasting 32 unique bedrooms, including opulent four-poster suites, a banqueting hall, restaurant, and even a dungeon licensed for civil ceremonies, has been owned by Chris and Rachel Swain for the past 25 years.

The couple restored much of the castle’s historic charm during their ownership, making it a top venue for weddings and holidays.

They added: “We could not have achieved this without the help of our loyal, dedicated and talented team who will remain in place. We leave with a heavy heart, but the time has come for us to move on and to pass the reigns to the new owners.”
