Newly re-opened Blacksmith’s Arms at Heighington near Darlington will welcome visitors to Walworth Castle development’s Open Days next week.

The former Dog Inn at Heighington, renamed and re-opened as the Blacksmith’s Arms, is a traditional family country inn on the edge of the pretty conservation village.

While acting as a focal point for the new residential park community, which will eventually have nearly 130 energy-efficient homes for sale, the inn is open to passing trade and has three letting bedrooms.

A series of Open Days is planned for the Walworth Castle development on Friday October 25 from 10am to 5pm; Saturday October 26 from 10am to 4pm and Sunday October 27 from 10am to 4pm

The pub has been renamed The Blacksmith’s Arms in tribute to a former smithy which occupied part of the site, the pub has been completely refurbished.

Pub manager Abbie Rayner said: “We have reopened to the joy of many of the locals who really missed their traditional English country pub.

"And while, so far, trade has been steady rather than madcap busy, it has suited us to bring on our friendly trained staff and let them get used to their refurbished surroundings.

“Presently we are only serving drinks and cold food during our opening hours of 3 to 11 but later in the year, we should be able to serve our customers a range of delicious, freshly made and delicious pub grub.(Image: Contributor)

Before it closed the pub was a Sunday lunch and carvery favourite of the residents of upmarket Heighington, a village which dates back to Saxon times and which is known locally for its attractive village green and charming open spaces.

On Monday, October 14, the pub unveiled its new menu. It showcases "a delightful blend of traditional British pub fare and Mediterranean influences".

Guests can enjoy snacks like Mini Chorizo Bites, Sourdough with Olive Oil and Balsamic, or the classic Mini Pork Pie.

For something heartier, the small plates offer unique flavours, such as the Scottish Smoked Salmon & Prosecco Parfait or the bold Fiery Calabrian Nduja Sausage on sourdough.

The Sharing Boards are a favourite. They feature an artisan selection of cheeses and cured meats, with options to personalise your board with delicacies like Carvery Ham and Snowdonia Black Bomber Cheddar.

The Paninis and Sandwiches offer comforting combinations such as Cheese and ham, Roast Beef and horseradish, and a refreshing Prawn Salad.

Just over a mile away is Walworth Castle itself, which dates back to 1150 and was home to the Hansard family – known as the Handsome Hansards – who are famous for chronicling the debates in the Houses of Parliament. It is now a luxury hotel.
