Rural patrols have been increased by Durham Police as part of a designated drive to crackdown on countryside crime in the past week.

The force’s neighbourhood policing teams have been stepping up rural patrols as part of Operation Checkpoint.

Several vehicles were stopped by officers and checks were carried out, while additional visits were made to local farms as police made a higher profile presence in the county’s rural communities.

The force thanked countryside dwellers for their cooperation during the week.

“Our rural policing patrols are essential in preventing crime, reassuring local communities, and building strong relationships with those in isolated areas.

“By maintaining a visible presence, we deter illegal activity, gather crucial intelligence, and ensure that residents and farmers feel safe and supported.”

He urged anyone seeing anything suspicious or in need of assistance to call 101 to contact the force but to use the 999 emergency line if the incident is ongoing.
