Several drivers have been fined and had penalty points added to their licences after being caught speeding across County Durham.

The cases were heard on October 10, 2024, as part of the Single Justice Procedure, with offenders facing fines, surcharges, and driving record endorsements.

5 drivers fined for speeding on A1(M) Darlington and Durham:

David McCallum, 57, of Kyo Road, Stanley, was fined for exceeding the 30 mph speed limit in Burnhope on January 4, 2024.

McCallum was driving his BMW over the restricted speed limit on C10 Fair View, Burnhope. The court fined him £769 and imposed a £308 victim surcharge, along with £110 in costs.

His driving record was endorsed with four points, though no disqualification was ordered due to exceptional hardship, as McCallum cited the need to attend medical appointments.

His total penalty is £1,187, payable by November 7, 2024.

Gavin Lee McDermott, 39, of Farrier Close, Washington, was found guilty of speeding on the A1(M) near Chester-le-Street on March 23rd, 2024.

McDermott was driving a Volvo at speeds exceeding the 70 mph limit.

He was fined £220, along with an £88 surcharge and £90 in costs. His driving record was endorsed with three points. The court set a deadline of November 7th, 2024, for payment.

Shannon Jade Tait, 23, of St. Buryan Crescent, Newcastle upon Tyne, was also caught exceeding the 70 mph motorway speed limit on January 13, 2024, on the A1(M) between Bowburn and Bradbury.

Tait, driving an Audi, was fined £660, ordered to pay a £264 surcharge, and £110 in costs. Her driving record was endorsed with six points, and she has until November 7, 2024, to pay the total balance of £1,034.

Meagan Elizabeth Lowther, 36, of Douglas Crescent, Bishop Auckland, pleaded guilty to speeding on the A1(M) near Bowburn on February 17, 2024.

She was driving a Vauxhall at speeds exceeding 70 mph.

The court fined her £100 and ordered a £40 victim surcharge.

Lowther’s driving record was endorsed with three points, and she was granted time to pay her £140 fine by November 7, 2024.

Daniel McLaughlin, 22, of Lund Avenue, Durham, was another driver caught exceeding the 70 mph limit on the A1(M) on February 11, 2024.

McLaughlin, driving a SEAT, was fined £360, with a £144 surcharge and £110 in costs. His driving record was endorsed with six points.

The court considered his guilty plea in sentencing and ordered that his balance of £614 be paid in monthly instalments, starting on November 7, 2024.
