A County Durham community has unveiled a heartfelt initiative offering bereaved residents a place to send letters to their lost loved one.
The thoughtful project, Letterbox to Heaven, is already gaining widespread praise from residents in Ushaw Moor, near Durham.
The initiative was spearheaded by local Durham county councillor Marion Wilson in collaboration with Ushaw Moor parish councillor Jimmy Jamieson.
Both saw the letterbox as a way to provide comfort to those dealing with loss.
The idea first emerged when a resident approached Wilson, asking for a dedicated space where locals could write letters to deceased family members and friends.
“The response has been great,” said Wilson. “It’s really brought comfort to people when they need it most.”
Cllr Marion added: “People just pour their hearts out in the letters, it has been nice to do something like this for the community to help support them.”
The idea was brought to Cllr Wilson several months ago by a resident of her ward, who requested a letterbox to heaven be installed in the village.
After hearing the suggestion, Cllr Wilson reached out to Cllr Jamieson, who chairs the Ushaw Moor Action Group, to assist with funding and ongoing care of the letterbox.
“He was more than happy to help, and we’re thrilled to see this finally come to life,” Wilson added.
