Commuters have been warned that cancelled and delayed trains are expected into the evening, after a fire on the railway system earlier today (Wednesday, October 9).

A signal cable fire on the line at Stevenage has impacted the East Coast mainline, from London to Edinburgh, passing through York, Darlington, Durham and Newcastle.

Grand Central, LNER and LUMO services between the North East and London will be subject to major delays and cancellations for the rest of today.

The fire on the track at Stevenage has now been extinguished, but it has caused damage to the infrastructure in the area, so all lines remain closed.

As a result, trains may be cancelled, severely delayed by up to 90 minutes or revised. Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

LNER has advised that their customers do not travel today, and instead use their tickets at another time, at no extra cost.

Which routes have been impacted by the fire?

  • Grand Central between Sunderland / Bradford Interchange and London Kings Cross
  • Great Northern between Stevenage and Moorgate
  • Hull Trains between Beverley / Hull and London Kings Cross
  • LNER between Aberdeen / Edinburgh / Newcastle / York / Harrogate / Leeds / Bradford Forster Square / Lincoln and London Kings Cross
  • Lumo between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross
