Cars have been left stranded and roads across the region are impassible after severe flooding.

Motorists battled flooded roads and long delays as they attempted to commute to work on Wednesday (October 9).

The A1(M) has been completely closed in both directions near Darlington with delays of more than one hour.

Parts of the A167 and A68 have been left flooded with water spanning the carriageway.

In Darlington Cocker Beck in The Denes was close to bursting its banks while rivers across the region have been running higher than normal.

Police have been out closing roads and the council is assisting with attempting to clear away the flood water.

Durham Police and County Council have both been contacted for comment.
